Mr.C

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Richard West, also known as Mr.C, was born in London in the late 1960s. He started MCing in London clubs at the age of 16 and soon earned a reputation as a fast-talking, energetic rapper, working with LWR radio’s Ron Tom, Jasper the Vinyl Junkie, and Jazzy M. In 1986, Mr.C joined forces with Colin Faver and Evil Eddie Richards, becoming the resident rapper at the legendary Camden Palace in London. Later, he became an MC for Colin Faver on the then-illegal pirate radio station Kiss FM.

He went into the studio to record his first Deep House track called Page 67 with Eddie Richards under the alias Myster-E, which was released in August 1987. This experience inspired Mr.C to become a DJ to deepen his knowledge of his beloved House and Techno music. In September 1987, Richard quit his job as a milkman and fully dedicated himself to DJing.

Since then, Mr.C has organized, promoted, and been a resident DJ at several iconic events: Fantasy (1988), Base (Dungeons 1989), Release (1991), Harmony (1992), Drop (1993), Cyclone (1994), Vapourspace (1994 and 1995), Flavour (The End 1995 and 1996), Subterrain (The End 1995 – 2002), Superfreq (Worldwide 2002 – Present), Super Disco Freq (LA 2010 – Present), and Souled Out (2021 – Present).

Influence on Rave Culture

He was a resident DJ and street promoter at the legendary RIP parties at Clink Street, London Bridge, throughout 1988. It is said that Rave Culture, as we know it, was born here, inspiring many of the large London orbital raves that followed in 1988, 1989, and 1990.

After working on various pirate radio stations such as LWR, Fantasy FM, and Dance FM, Mr.C hosted a weekly radio show called Future Music on Kiss 100FM in London from 1993 to 2002. He has also presented TV shows for MTV, FH1, VIVA, and the BBC, making Mr.C one of the most iconoclastic DJs in the world.

The Club that Changed the Face of London Nightlife

In December 1995, Mr.C opened his legendary nightclub The End in London with partner Layo Paskin, creating a blueprint for all modern-day nightclubs. The End celebrated its 13th anniversary in December 2008 and was hailed as one of the best nightclubs in the world, completely transforming the clubbing scene in London and beyond. Sadly, The End and AKA closed their doors for good on January 24th, 2009. But as always, one chapter closes and another begins.

Artist is the co-founder and owner of Plink Plonk Records, co-founder and co-owner of End Recordings, and the founder and co-owner of the Superfreq label, which continues to release music prolifically.

These hits became popular worldwide. The Shamen’s Boss Drum album went double platinum in the UK, and Richard also won the coveted Ivor Novello Award for Songwriters of the Year in the UK in 1992/93.

Currently, Richard records solo as Mr.C and collaborates under various projects: Indigo Kidz with Affie Yusuf, East LA Tek with Noel Jackson, Wonkytonk with Radio Rental, and his upcoming project The Cheek with Modulon.

The Superfreq Legacy

Mr.C runs and promotes Superfreq events, which celebrated its 22nd anniversary in March 2024. Superfreq hosted monthly events at Mr.C’s club The End until it closed in January 2009 and now operates bi-annually in London, rotating between various pop-up warehouse venues and clubs. These have included The Steelyard after a highly successful event with Richie Hawtin in December 2015, regular events at Fabric, and quarterly events at Red Gallery until its closure in July 2018. Afterward, Superfreq utilized various warehouse locations around London and hosted two events at Egg London. In 2023, Superfreq started hosting daytime events in London, including three standout events at Aures London, such as the Superfreq New Year’s Day Ball, and the upcoming event on September 28th, 2024.

This artist also organized larger all-day summer events called Superfreq Grande at the LDN East in 2023 and expanded its annual events to Koh Phangan, Thailand, with a superb night at Retro Mountain in January 2023, followed by two events at Samsara Koh Phangan in January and February 2024.

Superfreq Around the World

Superfreq holds regular events in Los Angeles and has hosted one-off events in Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, and Dallas, as well as in cities across the United States. The event has also been active in Vancouver, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico City, Ibiza, Bogota, Montañita, and other locations worldwide. Superfreq has completed two Asia tours, visiting Manila, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Beijing, and Shenzhen.

Super accomplished seven successful seasons in Ibiza in the 2000s.  Three at Club Underground, two at the legendary DC10, one season at Blu, three events at Aura, and hosted annual events at the BPM Festival in Playa Del Carmen until its unfortunate closure.

Looking Ahead

In 2024, Mr.C will be releasing new music from Superfreq’s impressive roster every month. His Radical Inclusion remixes received great acclaim in 2020 following the original release in the summer of 2019. He followed these remixes with his outstanding Celebration of Life single in late 2020. His recent Wonkytonk project with Radio Rental gained significant attention, with Mr.C’s own remix making a strong impact. Wonkytonk has a new release set for Spring 2025. His recent series of three back-to-back EP releases with Noel Jackson as East LA Tek also garnered considerable attention, as did Mr.C’s recent remixes for Nepotek, Sam Money, J Gabriel, Chuffing Buffy, and Terry Francis, all released under Superfreq.
