On an otherwise typical day in 1981, Fritz Kalkbrenner was born in East Berlin, during a time of significant political upheaval that would later shape his formative years. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany were pivotal moments that unfolded as his surroundings transformed into a creative hub. Berlin’s underground scene became the perfect environment for Fritz to flourish, eventually establishing himself as a key figure in the world of electronic music.
Influenced by his brother Paul Kalkbrenner, Fritz was soon drawn into the techno scene and Berlin’s evolving nightlife, a vibrant world of driving beats and newfound freedom. By 2003, he contributed his first vocal performance for childhood friend Sascha Funke‘s track “Forms & Shapes.” The track, which included a remix by Paul, received widespread acclaim and set the foundation for Fritz’s musical journey.
However, it was in 2008 that Fritz unintentionally created a generational anthem. His soulful vocals on “Sky & Sand,” featured in the film Berlin Calling, turned the track into a worldwide sensation, far surpassing its underground origins.
Building on this success, Fritz sought to develop a unique sound, blending emotive vocals with electronic beats. In 2010, after a string of successful singles, he released his debut album Here Today Gone Tomorrow, which fused his electronic club influences with rich, soulful elements. The album resonated widely, with standout tracks like “Facing the Sun” and “Kings in Exile” becoming essential listening.
With this breakthrough, Fritz began performing live, touring extensively across Germany and Europe. His second album Sick Travellin’ (2012) climbed into the Top 10 of the German album charts, cementing his reputation as a top-tier live performer. His third album Ways Over Water continued the trend, peaking at #6 in Germany and featuring his first Top 20 hit single, “Back Home.”
Constant touring across Europe and beyond secured Fritz’s place among the global elite of electronic music. In 2016, he released Grand Départ, reinforcing his growing international fanbase. Notable performances for ARTE and the French CERCLE series, filmed at the magnificent Domaine de Chantilly, underscored his influence in the electronic scene.
Always innovating, in 2018 Fritz released his purely instrumental album Drown, drawing inspiration from his early club days. Crafted using vintage synthesizers and drum machines, this album paid homage to his roots while showcasing his evolving artistry. That same year, Fritz launched his own label, Nasua Music, which gave him creative freedom and allowed for parallel releases with major labels.
In the years that followed, Fritz continued releasing major singles like “Kings & Queens” and his well-received 2020 album True Colours, which hit #6 on the album charts.
By 2021, Fritz embraced Deep House with the hit single “King Curtis,” which skyrocketed in streaming popularity. In 2022, he began incorporating pop elements into his electronic productions, resulting in the emotionally charged track “In the Morning,” reminiscent of sunrise.
In 2023, Fritz continued his streak of melodic, club-ready tracks with “Moments Gone,” followed by the vocal-driven hit “Waiting For The Sun,” which became a fan favorite on radio and streaming platforms. His accompanying tour packed major venues across Europe, while his old-school house track “Set You Free” reached #1 on Clubbing TV‘s global video charts in 2024.
Looking ahead, with multiple club and festival performances lined up, Fritz is set to release his new album Third Place on November 1, 2024, featuring singles like “The Telepath” and “Into The Night.”
