Mack Loenz delivers a Spotlight Mix with a distinct late night feel. It’s a carefully sequenced journey through electro, house, techno and bass heavy club music that arrives just ahead of his debut album, From The Heart, on Maceo Plex’s Lone Romantic imprint.
Set for release on 4 September, the album marks an important new chapter for Mack Loenz, bringing together his electro roots with a more cinematic and melodic approach built for bigger rooms.
Mack Loenz: From Exzakt to a New Chapter
Behind Mack Loenz is Larry McCormick, an artist already known to the electronic music community through his work as Exzakt. Under that alias, he released music through influential labels including Tresor, Fabric, Turbo and Skint, establishing a strong connection with electro and underground club culture.
With Mack Loenz, those foundations evolve into something broader. His productions combine analogue synthesis, glistening arpeggios, heavy basslines and emotional electronics, creating a sound that moves between dancefloor energy and a more reflective atmosphere.
His latest Spotlight Mix offers a clear introduction to this musical direction.
A Spotlight Mix Built for the Late Night
The mix opens with Fred again.. before Chris Lorenzo and Kah Lo push the energy further into club territory. Mack Loenz then introduces his own Right From Wrong Club Mix alongside Maceo Plex’s The Plan, immediately establishing a connection with the sound and aesthetics of Lone Romantic.
From there, the selection moves through tracks by Kyle Watson, Beswerda, Glowal, MPH and Anti Up, maintaining momentum without becoming trapped within a single genre or groove.
The result is a mix that feels dynamic without being unnecessarily eclectic. Each transition adds another layer to the overall journey.
Unexpected Turns and Heavy Low End
There are also several unexpected turns throughout the hour. Craze and Black V Neck bring a dose of low end swagger, while Mack Loenz introduces his own VIP mashup of Fred again.. and Skepta’s Victory Lap.
Maceo Plex appears several times across the tracklist, a natural choice considering the relationship between Mack Loenz, Lone Romantic and the forthcoming album.
As Data Transmission puts it:
“There are a few nice left turns too. Craze and Black V Neck bring some low-end swagger, Mack slips in his own VIP mashup of Fred again. and Skepta’s ‘Victory Lap’, while Maceo Plex appears several times across the hour. It makes sense given the relationship between Mack, Lone Romantic and the forthcoming album, but none of it feels like box-ticking. The records earn their place.”
It is a fitting description of the mix. The Maceo Plex selections are not simply references to the forthcoming release. They contribute to the flow and help define the musical space Mack Loenz is exploring.
From The Heart: Mack Loenz’s Debut Album
One of the key moments arrives late in the mix with Sunrise, one of two tracks from From The Heart featured in the selection.
The forthcoming ten track album takes Mack Loenz’s electronic foundations further, combining analogue synthesis, melodic arpeggios, powerful basslines and more emotive electronic textures.
Rather than separating club functionality from atmosphere, From The Heart appears to operate somewhere between the two, retaining the physical weight of electro and bass driven music while introducing a more cinematic dimension.
A Connection to Lone Romantic
The album’s release through Maceo Plex’s Lone Romantic imprint adds another important layer to the project. The repeated presence of Maceo Plex throughout the Spotlight Mix makes the connection particularly evident, while Mack’s own productions sit naturally alongside the label’s aesthetic.
The mix therefore works not only as a standalone DJ selection but also as a preview of the musical world surrounding From The Heart.
A Poignant Closing Track
Mack Loenz closes the hour with Maceo Plex’s 2013 remix of Kavinsky, a particularly poignant choice following the French producer’s death in Paris last month at the age of 50.
Kavinsky became one of the defining names of the second wave of French Touch, with a sound that extended far beyond his best known track Nightcall. His influence continues to resonate across electronic music, particularly through the connection between synth driven production, cinematic atmosphere and club culture.
Ending the mix with Maceo Plex’s remix gives the final minutes a different emotional weight, bringing the journey to a close with a track that connects several generations of electronic music.
